Some time after, Kate and Miss Parker arrived at The
Centre and headed immediately to her office, in the Tower. There, Miss Parker
called Willie and all the important sweepers to interrogated them. They were all
a little bit anxious because they all knew Miss Parker was in Maine and they all
knew her reasons. So, when Miss Parker questioned them about a mission 6 years
ago in Maine, none of them was surprised.
"Didn't you hear what I asked? I asked you if you
recall a mission in Maine 6 years ago?" Miss Parker said.
"Excuse me, Miss Parker" Willie started
"But we don't recall every mission we do."
"Oh, I see. You're all high trained operatives, and
you're telling me that you don't remember that operation. That's funny! So, tell
me, would it be a collective amnesia attack? That one of you can't recall it's
understandable, but the whole group? For God's sake!"
"But..." Willie said.
"Shut up! You killed a man in cold blood and you
didn't even cover your tracks well."
"What?"
"Someone identify you, Willie. And now, will you
tell me who did it or are we gonna do this the hard way?"
"Miss Parker?!" An unknown sweeper said.
"I'm all ears."
"Six years ago, Mr. Parker and Mr. Raines ordered
six of us to eliminate a man that lived up in Maine. If I recall well, he's name
was Ben Miller. And that we should leave no tracks, unlike other times."
"Shut up!!!" Willie shouted "That's
classified!"
"I would like to remind you that I'm the president
of The Centre, which means, that nothing is classified to me. Unless it was
personal."
"Of course it was personal!" Willie said
"At The Centre everything is personal."
"Good one! Now that you confessed, let's see... what
was the motive?"
"Mr. Parker and Mr. Raines didn't want you to have
an opportunity to know your real father, because you could leave The Centre...
and take many secrets with you."
"Oh! So was that the truth? Like I didn't know it
already."
"What?!"
"I already knew the truth, but I needed to hear it
from your mouths."
"What?"
"It's the only way I can take you to the authorities."
"You'll never prove it!"
"Is that so? Watch me!" Miss Parker said,
snapping her fingers.
Lots of sweepers showed up and also Kate with a tape
recorder in her hands.
"With the word recorded in this tape, you will see
your lives in squares until your death arrives. Hum! That should be pretty soon,
considering the application of the capital punishment."
