As the episode begins, Jarod
hears in the news that an agent from the Secret Services committed suicide.
Jarod remembers that he met Todd Baxter in the night that he escaped from The
Centre; he gave him a lift. Jarod
poses himself as a Secret Services agent in order to find out what really
happened to Todd, for he doesn't believe the version he heard. When he meets his
partners (agents Halder and Talbot), Jarod inspects Baxter's hotel room. The
agents explain that Todd Baxter was last seen at the bar with his girlfriend,
until they headed to the bedroom, where he took drogues. Talbot also informs
Jarod that the FBI is trying to prove that Baxter's death was an homicide and
that he wants Jarod to make them believe in the suicide theory. After Talbot's
leave, Bailey Malone ("Profiler") from the VCTF, Violent Crime Task
Force, arrives and introduces himself to Jarod, also giving him the autopsy
report. Bailey is intrigued with Jarod because when he last worked with him
Jarod was using another surname. At
The Centre, Miss Parker enters her father's office, saying that she just heard
that her brother is in surveillance. Mr. Parker tells her that he's proud of
her, but Miss Parker is troubled because of all that happened in the last few
weeks. Mr. Parker keeps telling her that she must focus in finding Jarod. He
then tells her that it's a new day at The Centre, hugging her tenderly after
that. Somewhere else at
The Centre, Sydney is doing an experiment with plants, proud of what he
achieved. But he stops when he spots a plastic bag between the pots. When he
sees a broken watch inside of it, Sydney is enraged and some of the pots are
thrown to the floor. Then, he runs out of the room. Halder
tells Jarod that the VCTF is convinced that Baxter was murdered by a serial
killer, due to their profiler's opinion. When Jarod is imagining how it would be
like to meet Samantha Waters again, Rachel Burke arrives - she's the new
profiler. Jarod and Rachel have different opinions and they obviously don't
start with the right foot. Halder interrupts them, saying that they tracked
Baxter's girlfriend and that her name is Emily Sadler. Jarod offers himself to
question her, while assuring Rachel that he'll tell her everything. Emily
tells Jarod that she met Todd Baxter while taking Journalism and that he had
demons with him. Emily confirms that Todd took drogues and that they had a fight
that night. Emily says that her demon is letting him alone that evening. She
also tells Jarod that she believes that Todd Baxter could have jumped from the
window. Miss Parker sees
what Sydney did to his plants, while Broots discovers that Angelo put an
evidence bag between the pots. Miss Parker doesn't want to believe that Sydney
didn't come to her for help, while watching him destroying his plants. Talbot
pressures Jarod to end the investigation in the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, Jerry
Linden arrives and informs them that Baxter had another problem in his files: he
was arrested in college for possessing heroin. He also says that the Secret
Services don't care if he was murdered. During
the night, someone tries to strangle Emily with a piano cord, the same way that
Todd Baxter was, but Jarod arrives in time to save her. After what happened,
Jarod and Emily talk and she confesses that Baxter was only her friend. She
continues, saying that she lied because of an anonymous phone call from someone
that also put photos of her father in her mailbox. Jarod learns that all that
was said about Baxter is a lie. In
Sydney's lab, Miss Parker is listening to Angelo, that keeps saying that Sydney
lost hope and that The Centre takes hope. Miss Parker is frustrated, but
suddenly Angelo says that Mr. Parker takes hope from Sydney. In a road
somewhere, Sydney is sobbing in his car that is parked in front of a
"Curve Ahead" sign. At
the offices, Jarod is trying to talk with Rachel. Talbot arrives and Jarod tells
him what Emily told him about Baxter saying that he would be in the news soon
and that the reporter that was going to publish it died. Once again, Rachel and
Jarod have different opinions: Jarod defends that whoever killed Baxter also
killed the reporter, while Rachel defends that the killer did it because he
liked to. When Talbot leaves them, Jarod and Rachel talk friendly and Rachel
promises to cook a real soup for Jarod, because he only eats 'Cup 'O Soup. Jarod
speaks with Halder about the files inside Baxter's briefcase, and he tells him
that they were disconnected. Jarod receives a phone call from Bailey, where he
tells him that Baxter wasn't arrested and that that is a lie. Talbot and Linden
approach Jarod and he tells them that he wants to find the cop that arrested
Baxter in college, but Linden says that he has already interviewed him. Jarod
gets suspicious. Jarod
tells Emily that it was Linden who changed the files from the briefcase and she
tells him that those files must be already destroyed. Jarod gets the bag with
the shredded paper and puts together all the papers during the night. Miss
Parker confronts her father about Sydney's reaction when seeing the broken
watch. Finally, Mr. Parker tells her that Sydney killed a woman. Bailey
meets Jarod and wants to know who he is, because he remembered that the last
time they meet Jarod was working under a different name. Jarod says that he
works for the Congress. Miss
Parker and Broots discover the file about Sydney's "affair". Sydney
hired a student from France and was involved with her in the beginnings of
Jarod's Project. She died when Sydney lost control of the car and hit a tree. Jarod
shows Rachel what he was able to do during the night. The documents say that
Jerry Linden is the principal suspect of the crime. After Jarod has filled her
in, Rachel offers him the "bouillabaisse" she promised. Miss
Parker and Broots find Sydney in the restaurant where he had dinner with Claudia
before the accident. Sydney, who drunk half a bottle of whiskey, tells them that
he gave the watch to Claudia for her birthday, that they were celebrating that
night. He denies the affair that The Centre says he had with Claudia, saying
that it is a lie fabricated by them, so they could keep him there. For
the first time, Rachel and Jarod agree on something. Both conclude that Linden
isn't the killer, but that he will lead them to him. Miss
Parker confronts her father again, taking Sydney with her. Mr. Parker says that
he followed orders and that he's not liking her attitude. Miss Parker says that
she only wants Sydney to have closure. Then, Mr. Parker sends Claudia in. She
didn't die after all. She is a psychiatrist in a hospital funded by The Centre
in France. Sydney and Claudia are surprised to see each other, because both
thought that the other was dead. Sydney is very happy, while Miss Parker watches
them, a little shaken. In
the same hotel where Baxter "fell" of the window, Jarod is waiting for
Linden. In the hotel room, Jerry Linden doesn't want to talk, because he knows
that he's being recorded, so Jarod unplugs the wire that allowed Rachel and the
other agent to see what was happening. With some persistence and using the same method
that Linden used on Baxter, Jarod finally hears Linden saying who the killer is:
agent Halder, that is waiting near the elevator. Jarod and Rachel, however,
can't catch him. Jarod
says goodbye to Emile. Rachel tells Jarod that they weren't able to find Halder
and then she realizes that Jarod is alone in the world. She offers to listen to
him, if he needs a new friend, kisses him and leaves.
